Sergio Silva-Castañeda is an assistant professor and current Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Department of International Studies at ITAM. Regularly, he teaches courses on US history and Latin America. He studied economics at CIDE in Mexico and received a Ph.D. in Latin American History at Harvard in 2009. He was a Lecturer at Harvard’s history department and at the Social Studies Program. He was also a Senior Fellow for Mexico and Central America at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies.

His main academic interests are Latin American History, Comparative Economic Development and US-Latin American Relations. Around these topics he has many publications such as the book “Matías Romero y el Oficio Diplomático”, coauthored with Graciela Marquez. He has also published refereed articles as “Transatlantic Demographers: The Italian Influence over population policy in Mexico and Spain, 1930-1973” published by the Journal of Policy History, and “Towards an Anthropometric History of Latin America in the Second Half of the 20th Century” published by Economics and Human Biology.

He has published multiple op-eds and dissemination articles in multiple media such as Foreign Affairs Latin America, Nexos, ReVista, Letras Libres, and Horizontal. These articles cover a wide range of topics, from economic development to current events in Latin America and US-Latin America relations. He has participated in multiple conferences at institutions such as the Matías Romero Institute, the Mexican Senate’s Belisario Dominguez Institute and the MIDE.
